I’m a New Student. How do I qualify?
New students applying to the college should indicate on their Application for Admission that they would also like to be considered for the Merit Scholarship. New students are evaluated on the strength of their application materials and their Admissions Interview. A higher standard of excellence is used in awarding the scholarship than in making the admissions decision itself. The Merit Scholarship Committee is looking for evidence of outstanding academic and personal Scholar Phase preparation. A letter of decision for the scholarship is sent along with their other admissions decision materials. Decisions of the Merit Scholarship Committee are final.
I’m a Returning Student. How do I qualify?
Returning students are evaluated on the strength of their performance in the previous semester of enrollment. In addition to their regular course grade, students are evaluated by their mentor on a scale of 1 to 3 in the areas of academic and leadership excellence. A score of “3” in either area indicates outstanding performance. A “2” indicates that the student is doing well but should be doing better. A “1” indicates that the student is performing below GWC standards. A student receiving “3”s in both areas will be awarded the scholarship. Whether or not the scholarship is awarded to students who earn lesser scores is up to the mentor’s discretion. Decisions of the mentor in regards to the awarding of the Merit Scholarship are final. Students meet regularly with their mentor throughout the semester and have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or plans for improvement with their mentor well in advance of final grades and scholarship scores being awarded at semester’s end. Recipients may apply the scholarship against the tuition of any semester occurring in the twelve months following the award date of the scholarship.
Where Can I Get More Information?
Persons applying for admission, students returning from more than one year of absence or students transferring from another institution or from a George Wythe College off-campus program should direct any questions to the Director of Admissions.
