Hebrew 101
Thomas Jefferson Style
A Six-Day Language Immersion Seminar at George Wythe College

December 3-8, 2007

Ideas, culture and vision all require language in order to be formed. Hebrew is the language of freedom. It was studied more than any other language by the Founding generation. In fact, it was once proposed in Congress that Hebrew become our National Language. It changed the way the Founders read the Old Testament and paved the way for the revolution and the Constitution. Hebrew is the language of virtue. It is the storage vault of the Judeo-Christian Moral Code. It is the language of God and Family. Hebrew is the language of languages. Many languages spoken throughout the world, including English, have deep origins in Hebrew. In addition, the study of Hebrew will take you beyond the traditional language approach of phonetics and plunge you into a depth of rich symbolism, mathematical analysis, and a vocabulary of allusion beyond your normal experience.

Learn to read and write Hebrew faster than you ever thought possible and learn it through the approach of a Thomas Jefferson Education: Classics, Mentors, Simulations, Field Experiences, and God. As an off-campus student, you can earn language credits in a stimulating on-campus environment. This one-week seminar will be one of the most enjoyable experiences of your educational program. Don’t miss the opportunity to attend this language immersion seminar at George Wythe College!

This seminar offers the opportunity for you to:

  • Learn to read, write and transliterate Hebrew in the first 6 hours of class!
  • Gain a rudimentary knowledge of the Hebrew language that is common to both Biblical and Modern Hebrew.
  • Study and interact in Hebrew for 10-13 hours per day.
  • Learn various ways of poetically, numerically and symbolically interpreting Hebrew texts.
  • Learn what the Hebrew language has to teach you about your identity, heritage and personal mission.
  • Learn Hebrew through real-life interaction, like games, stories, dancing, performing and laughing!
  • Begin to understand the Hebrew of the Old Testament and even read the Old Testament in Biblical Hebrew—with nothing lost in translation!
  • Work with great mentors and tutors in a highly interactive environment that is developmentally sequenced and personalized.
  • Develop a year-long study plan to help you in your language studies in-between blocks.
  • Earn 2 to 4 language credits (credit awarded to currently enrolled GWC students).

What students have said:

“This week of Hebrew has been the most intense educational experience of my life. I have grown more this week than I thought possible.”
(J. H., Alberta, Canada)

“The more I understand ancient Jewish philosophy and culture, the deeper and richer scriptures become. Hebrew is the key which opens the door to Jewish culture and philosophy.” (A. W., Kansas, USA)
