The American Commonwealth
Graduate Seminar
December 14-15, 2007

Almost a century after Alexis de Tocqueville visited America, another European decided to visit and see what changes had occurred since Tocqueville’s tour. James Bryce found a very different nation, stretching clear to California and applying new models of government, politics, media, community, academia, religion and economy. In true Tocqueville-like fashion, he outlined the America of the early 20th Century, noted a number of trends, and predicted where America was headed. His predictions turned out to be very accurate, and they are still relevant today. This seminar will study the two-volume writings of James Bryce on The American Commonwealth. Don’t miss this intense analysis of America. It promises to be one of the best books you’ve ever read on freedom and government as well as one of the best seminars you’ve ever attended.
